Baltasar Espinosa, a medical student, is invited by his cousin to spend the summer at his estate, but a torrential downpour floods the fields, leaving him isolated with the Gutre family, a group of laborers.
As they wait for the waters to recede, Baltasar reads to them "The Gospel According to Mark." His personification of Jesus, the apocalyptic context of the rain, and the Gutre family's interpretation of the sacred text ultimately lead him to his own crucifixion.
